Relationship Coaching and Guidance
My approach to relationship coaching is to focus on positive change. The first thing I generally ask my clients is “what do you want for the relationship?”, rather than “what brings you here?”
Through my own and others’ experiences, I have seen many relationship interventions, such as marriage guidance counselling or relationship therapy, focus on the presenting problems, rather than on supporting the relationship to develop. My aim is help individuals learn how to work together to avoid preventable problems and deal with the unavoidable ones successfully, together.
Part of my intention as a relationship coach, is to support all individuals in the relationship to increase their self-awareness. Becoming more aware of what is going on inside and being able to manage our emotions helps us become more able to choose how to respond, rather than simply react.
Coaching the Relationship
With some marriage counselling techniques, there is a tendency to see relationship clients purely as two individuals. When I coach a relationship, not only is my focus on the individuals, it is also on the relationship itself. Like the conductor of an orchestra, I listen to the individuals in the context of the whole relationship. I guide each person to develop awareness, understanding and consideration of the other, in order to create harmony. This can including working one-to-one with each individual, as well as all of us working together.
